The One Thing Your Brand Is Missing: Storytelling
May 13, 2026If you’ve been working hard on your credentials, refining your offers, and sharing content but still feel like you’re getting lost in the noise online, the shift you need is simpler than you think.
Tell more stories.
It sounds almost too basic, but this is where many entrepreneurs, especially women building businesses from the ground up, miss the mark. They focus on proving expertise instead of creating connection. And in doing so, they become forgettable.
But when you understand how the brain processes story, everything changes.
Your Brain Is Built for Story
Research from Stanford shows that stories are up to 22x more memorable than facts alone. That gap is not minor. It is the difference between someone remembering you after meeting you… or forgetting you entirely five minutes later.
When we hear a story, something called neural coupling happens. The listener’s brain begins to sync with the storyteller’s. Emotionally and neurologically, connection is formed.
This is why stories feel personal, even when they are not ours.
As Maya Angelou said:
“People will forget what you said, what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.”
Storytelling is how you create that feeling in your brand.
Why Credentials Alone Don’t Build Connection
Most entrepreneurs lead with qualifications, experience, and services.
But here’s the truth: those are not what people remember.
Credentials build credibility. Stories build connection.
And in a trust-driven economy, connection is what drives decisions.
As Laura Bell, co-host of the Resilient Entrepreneurs Podcast, puts it:
“Most of us lead our personal brand with credentials and features. And that’s exactly what is the most forgettable thing about us.”
A Story That Proves the Point
During a visit to the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda, an unexpected moment stopped everything.
A young boy, a stranger, walked up to Laura and said: “Brown Bear, Brown Bear…”
Without thinking, she responded: “…what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me.”
She hadn’t read that book in over eleven years.
Yet every word came back instantly.
That is what story does. It doesn’t just inform. It stays.
And that is exactly what your brand needs to do.
Why Your Story Is More Powerful Than You Think
Many women entrepreneurs believe their story isn’t “interesting enough.”
But you are too close to your own life to see its value.
The truth is, powerful stories are not always dramatic. They are honest. Human. Relatable.
You can start here:
- Client moments: When did a client experience change how you see your work?
- Hard seasons: What did failure teach you that success never could?
- Perspective shifts: What changed your thinking completely?
- Your origin story: Why did you start this work in the first place?
Your “why” story is often the most magnetic. As Simon Sinek reminds us, people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.
Truth Needs Story to Be Heard
A Sufi fable tells of Truth walking naked into a village. No one would let him in.
Then Story arrived, dressed Truth in beautiful clothes, and suddenly everyone welcomed them.
The message is simple: truth alone is not always received. Story is what makes it land.
Not to distort the truth, but to make it accessible.
Authenticity Is Everything
One warning: never fabricate your stories.
As Laura says:
“Making up stories is the worst thing you can do for your brand. One lie erases all trust.”
Your power is not in performance. It is in truth.
And ironically, the more real you are, the more magnetic your brand becomes. You attract the right people and naturally filter out the rest.
As Vicki Abraham reminds us:
“The whole idea of a personal brand is that you don’t need to perform. Just be you, speak from the heart.”
Your Story Is What Makes You Memorable
“Your expertise gets you in the room. Your story is what makes people remember you when you leave it.”
That is the shift.
You already have the expertise. Now it is about how you are remembered.
